SOUTH AMERICAN PACU

(Piaractus spp.)

The Pacu is a large, omnivorous fish native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. Often called the “vegetarian cousin of the piranha,” it shares the same family (Characidae) but has a very different diet and temperament. While not as predatory as dorado or payara, the pacu is a challenging and underrated gamefish, known for brute strength, endurance, and its quirky habit of eating fruits and nuts.
Pacu can crack nuts and crush seeds with their molar-like teeth — they help spread seeds throughout the rainforest.

Some species, like Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), can grow to massive sizes and are considered a top-tier freshwater trophy.
