The Arapaima, also known locally as “Pirarucu” or “Paiche”, is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world and a living fossil of the Amazon Basin. With its massive, armour-like scales and need to surface-breathe air, it is both prehistoric and majestic.
It’s a revered and highly sought-after species for sportfishing, ecotourism, and scientific study.
Their diet includes fish and other aquatic animals.
Fishing methods include using large lures or bait, with anglers often sight-casting to surfacing fish.
